From Kaliningrad

Dear Sirs !

We've already felt of earthquake in Kaliningrad. Our Radio- and TV-companies
will not answer for any our question. Please let us know, what is the
possibility of repeating of earthqueke at our region and what will be the

Hello

Both earthquakes I felt at home in Kaliningrad on a 3rd floor. The
first lasted for 3-5 seconds and I felt myself like being in a car
rocked by someone. Lots of people went out to the street after warning
about possible earthquake of larger magnitude, heard on radio. With no
panic at all.
The second one lasted for about 10-15 seconds, peak magnitude felt
for 3-5 seconds, then it slowly reduced. Light was blinking, we heard
cracking sounds in the walls, floor hardly pushed our feet and there
was frightful low-frequency rumble.
All the known destructions:
- some old brick flues on roofs;
- some walls seemlessly cracked
- they say that near Svetlogorsk ground prosat under railways

Hello
Also want to share my experience with recent events in Kaliningrad.
At 11:05 GMT there was the 1st quake consisting of smaller and larger stroke. I was sitting at my desktop at the 3rd floor of our
office and felt that suddenly the roof have started shaking back and forth.
Occasionally, rather stong wind 'accompanied' the stroke, so first thought
was it was wind-driven something. However, when larger stroke shaked the
house people sneaked out the office and began to discuss the event.
Mobile and regular phone network went out of work or just overloaded.
Gradually it turned to normal mode, while cell phones were dead for some 2-3 hours.
Whilst the first fear calmed down I called my mother-in-law, who leaves
near Baltiysk and got to know from her it was quite similar to the quakes
at Kazakhstan she had experienced, when she lived there. Then (ca. 14:30 LT - 11:30 GMT)
I called the Geophysical Service of Russian Academy of Sciences at Obninsk near Moscow.
They proved they've registered seismologic event at 15:05:07 MSK (11:05:07 GMT).
Further on it was possible to trace the information on their website.
Unfortunately detailed info was in Russian
http://www.ceme.gsras.ru/cgi-bin/info_quake.pl?mode=1&id=61,
but some basic data in English
http://www.ceme.gsras.ru/cgi-bin/ccd_quake_tmpe.pl?dat=21-09-2004&x=19&y=9
Colleagues from Gdansk proved yesterday, they also had 2 strokes.
See infor from Warsaw http://www.igf.edu.pl/~pwiejacz/1/21wrz.html (in Polish)
As for damages: no major damages occured, except of prosat at the
railway and some crack in the old buildings. However, psychological
condition of people, particulalrly after early September events in Beslan,
got quite impacted.

From Lithuania

Dear Sirs,

As you know, two extraordinary events took
place in Kalingrad area (quite close to Lithuania) yesterday. The events
were felt on large part of Lithuania's territory. Four seismic station located
in Lithuania has recorded it.
I would like to thank you for your real time seismic system and web page.
It helped us a lot trying to find out what is going on.
Some info (a bit outdated) on seismisity in
Lithuania you can find on http://www.lgt.lt/index.php?_LAPAS=seismo

Hi, i would like to say that i have felt earthquake which was in Kaliningrad
at 17.35 lithuanias time. I live in Vilnius, Lithuania. Also i could say that
it was particulary strong. Could you explain, if this earthquake was natural,
or human made by some kind of explosion?

Hello,

I found http://www.emsc-csem.org/Html/PRIMORSK_210904.html and thought that
my submission might be useful.
Current location is Kaunas, Lithuania, a few km from city centre. I was in a
first floor of an brick building. Both events could be felt clearly. Things
like that are virtually impossible here, so at the first time I thought
it was my imagination or something. At my work desk, there stands a lamp with
spring support (nice seismoscope, by the way!) -- it wiggled up and down with
a magnitude of about 1 cm. The chair that I've been sitting on, though also
with spring support, passed the disturbance over; on a stiff chair, I would
expect more.
And that's it. No trembling windows, things tumbling down, etc.

Hello,
We felt earthquake with all coworkers very well. Both strikes. But any damage
were made, no broken cups :+) We work in center of Kaunas, 5th floor.

The bad thing is that noone knows how big this earthquake is gonna be.
So, you don't know if you stay still and work or keep your monitor on the
table or run away

21.09.2004 abt 16.35 local time Klaipeda Lithuania

I was on the 4th floor, it was like 3 waves, 2 strong and 3d like an echo.
It was absolutely obvious, the building had been hit from the western side.
What are the prospects?
It sounds stupid, but those annoying dogs are quiet the same way as yesterday
just before the quake.

Hello,

I was on the 6th. floor in Kaunas, Lithuania. I've heard the news about
the first quake and was anticipating the next one. I had made a simple
pendulum from a long thin fishing line and 100 gram fishing weight. The
pendulum was tied very close to the wall. Around 16:35 local time (13:35
GMT) I've felt a strange subtle feeling, then suddenly there were 2
stronger but very smooth waves and a few seconds later a weaker third. I
kept my eyes on the pendulum, which had inclined roughly ~1.5 cm max.

At the same time one of my friends was talking on the phone with someone
in Klaipeda. During the call the person in Klaidepa said that he just felt
a shock wave, roughly 8 seconds later the wave was felt in Kaunas.

It was very exciting, because I had no expectations to ever feel a quake
in Lithuania.

Hello.

Yes! I have felt it! I live in Estonia. I was sitting at my PC and was
chatting with my friends on IRC, but then suddenly my table started to move,
and monitor too!
I was really shocked, I thought I've gone crazy, but then I looked on the lamp
(the one, which is on the ceiling) and I saw it was moving too.
The I understood what had happened. I feel very sorry for those, who live in
Kaliningrad :|
From Latvia

From Riga, Latvia : Along with about 10 coworkers we felt the Earthquake on the 4th
floor of our office building in Old Riga. First around 14.10 loceal time,
second and third around 16.35 and 16.38. There are reports of earthquake
from other Latvian cities as well.

*************************

my mother-in-law has felt the 21 Sep. 2004 earthquake
from Primorsko in Valka, Latvia, near to the Estonian
border. She heard jingling of the glass windows in the
cabinet and felt moving of the chair at the time
period 4.30 - 4.35 p.m. of local Latvian time.

From Poland

Regarding macroseismic information, the events have been widely
felt in Poland as far as Bialystok towards the SE,
Plock towards the S, Torun to the SW and Slupsk to the W. It may
be interesting that there seems to be a band
in the area of Ketrzyn-Mikolajki-Pisz where the events were
weakly felt. Biggest effects were in Olsztyn and Elblag,
but these are the major cities of the region, only ones that have
high rise buildings (I'm not mentioning Gdansk-Gdynia
which are by the sea and on this day there was a 10 degree
Beaufort storm). There are accounts of water spilling from
glasses and dishes.

There has been a great interest from the television, radio and
press. Yesterday we've been answering about 60 telephones
per hour, another 50 filled up our voice mail, clogging it dead.
There is at least much uncertainty - if not fear - among
not only people but also among some services. There came a
telephone call from the Supreme Command of Fire Department
to tell me they are overtaking our seismological center. To this
I said OK and they haven't spoken up ever since.

From Finland

These earthquakes in Poland were felt in Southern Finland. The building I work
in in Helsinki shook so much I left it in a hurry at around 16.40.
From Sweden

According to the news media the earthquake was felt strongly in Sweden, where city hall
in Landskrona was evacuated.
From Denmark
The earthquake (2.one) was felt in Denmark as a Richter 3.
I have reported it to http://www.geus.dk/, and there is Danish
newscoverage of it today at
http://politiken.dk/VisArtikel.iasp?PageID=337106.
It was felt all over Denmark. I probably wouldnt have registered it had
I been walking, but sitting at my worktable, leaning on it, it was quite
clear. Not a scare just... strange. Have never felt an earthquake
before.

Kind regards

The earthquake has been widely felt in Denmark, and we have by now received
on the order of 100 felt reports. Most of the reports come from the
Copenhagen area and north of the city, but we have also several independent
and credible reports from the city of Aalborg, which is located about 150 km
away from Copenhagen. The 11:05 earthquake was probably also felt in
Denmark. We have two independent reports that could fit very well with that
quake.

From Belarus

Hello,

The second earthquake was very distinctly felt in Hrodna/Grodno
(Belarus), on third storey of brick building. First, there came
vibration and rumbling sound much resembling heavy railroad train
passing at about 200m distance. Both vibration and sound, however, grew
stronger fast, to the point chair and floor "sliding" back and fro under
me and coffee in the mug making waves ~2cm high. Glass in window panes
made intensive vibrant sounds. The whole affair lasted (subjectively)
short. People from lower stories claimed later they didn't feel anything
unusual then.

Personally, I didn't feel the first earthquake. Of unusual events. On
Sep 21, in time roughly between earthquake events, we had here rather
unexpected extremely violent rainfall, extremely violent thunderclaps.

--regards
