EMSC Real Time Seismicity
Frequently Asked Questions

What are the information displayed on this page?
This page shows the current seismic activity by displaying the last recorded earthquakes.
Maps and additionnal information are linked to each event.

Where do the data come from?
These information come from several (more than 50) individual seismological networks in the Euro-Med region. These networks provide seismological parametric data (locations and phase pickings) to EMSC, either automatically or manually, as soon as they have detected an event. See list of participating networks.

- The events that appear in red have been reported by at least 2 networks and their locations have been computed manually by EMSC.
- The events that appear in black bold have been reported by at least 2 networks and their locations have been computed automatically by EMSC.
 - The other events displayed have been reported by only one network which is authoritative in the region where the event occurred.

How often is this page updated?
This page is fully dynamic. The last column "Last update" indicates the last time (in GMT time) the location has been updated or located. Therefore, the location and magnitude for each event may vary subsequently as new data are integrated minute by minute.
For example, an EMSC automatic location (that appears in black bold), is recomputed as soon as new data for this event are made available.

What is the meaning of each column?
For each event, the following parameters are displayed :
- Date : The day the event occured.
- Time : Time of occurence of the event (in UTC = Universal Time).
- Lat : Latitude of the event (in decimal degrees).
- Lon : Longitude of the event (in decimal degrees).
- Depth : Depth of the hypocenter (in kilometers).
- Mag : Magnitude type + magnitude value of the event.
- Region name : Name generated from the Flinn-Engdahl (F-E) seismic and geographical regionalization scheme. The name of these regions may differ from country names.
- Last Update : The last time (in GMT time) the location has been updated or the event has been relocated.
