The dogs across the street started barking about 2- minutes before it hit. They knew something was up before we did! My pet bird was perched on the back of my office desk chair. He wanted up on my shoulder pronto and did not fuss when I placed him back in his cage (safety reasons)! It was a rolling sensation from what seemed west to east.
