Hurdal (Norway)
This is the strongest earthquake I have ever experienced.
Sound:
The sound developed like a sine wave: it began faintly, rose rapidly to a maximum, and then faded away. It sounded somewhat like a heavy transport aircraft braking hard in the air, almost like a slow explosion several kilometres away. The sound level was high, but the dominant tone was deep, similar to that produced by a large rockslide, landslide, or snow avalanche. It appeared to originate from two sources: the deeper component seemed to come from the ground, while the higher-frequency components seemed to come from outdoors.
Vibration:
Our house is built directly on bedrock, and I was working in my office in the basement at the time. The ground began shaking quite violently, and windows and glass objects rattled. The vibration was clearly visible to the naked eye.
Duration:
It is somewhat difficult to estimate, but the shaking lasted approximately 10 seconds.
Reactions:
Our dog jumped up, clearly startled. The cat ran away and hid. Those of us living here reacted immediately, almost with concern given the current situation, because the event was loud and powerful in a way we have never experienced before.+3
