We were sleeping, so it woke us up. We are living on the 9th and last floor of a building built in the 1970s, which is said to be constructed in a specific way for cases like this. At least, that's what they say. My mother has been living here since the building was finished and says something like this had never happened before. Everything was shaking, there was a very specific noise while it lasted. The wardrobe in my room opened and thing were falling out, at one moment I thought the wardrobe would fall on us. Pictures, flower pots, our personal stuff.. everything fell and is all over the apartment.. Somehow, our dishes and glasses remained in their kitchen cabinets, but on the very edge. I am not sure if it stayed at its place after the second earthquake.
Anyways, there is a lot of damage in the streets, especially in the city center. Cars are destroyed by bricks that fell off buildings. One neighbourhood suffered a flood because a waterpipe had burst. People from retirement homes and hospitals, including women who gave birth recently and newborns in incubators, in some areas are being evacuated because buildings are so severely damaged, there is a high risk of collapsing. Some areas have no electricity.
First the outbreak of COVID-19, now earthquakes.. What's next?
